The Dog Who Never Left

The Dog Who Never Left

Loyalty is easiest to see when it is inconvenient. It is the dog that is still at the door after everyone else has stopped checking, and it is the reason a quiet house does not feel quite empty.

We talk about loneliness as if it were a problem of numbers — too few friends, too few calls. A dog does not count. It simply stays, and staying turns out to be most of what people were missing.

Presence is the whole gift

A loyal dog does not fix anything. It does not offer advice or ask for an explanation. It sits beside you until the worst of the day has passed, and it is still there tomorrow. That is not a small thing; for a lot of people it is the thing that gets them up in the morning.

Loyalty is not a trend. It is a choice you make every single day.

What we can borrow from it

None of us can be as constant as a dog, but we can be more constant than we are. Answer the call. Turn up when it is not convenient. Stay a little longer than is comfortable. It is the same virtue we put on the Bulldog, and it is the one that costs the most and returns the most.

That is the only claim here. Everything else is a T-shirt with a reminder printed on it.
